US Operators Push For Online Casinos

December 21st, 2007 in New Casinos Online, Online Casinos

Major casino operators in the United States are putting pressure on Congress to legalize gambling on internet websites run within the country. Company giants such as MGM Mirage and Harrah’s Entertainment are going head to head against internet casino opponents who are pushing to get American’s out of the online casino customer group with stricter laws and penalties.

The recent Jack Abramoff scandal involving Indian casinos caused an anti-gambling sentiment in Congress, but now these casino companies are trying to use this to their advantage. The casino companies are now stating that the only real way to gain control over the $12 billion gambling on internet, oversees industry is to bring those companies into the country. Once the United States becomes home to various online casinos, Congress can then legalize, tax and regulate the industry.

“The argument the industry is making is, if it is being done offshore, why not bring it in to the US so it can be regulated?” said Nevada Republican Senator John Ensign while discussing the issue with Harrah’s Entertainment, the world’s largest casino owner. “It doesn’t look like you can ban it.”

According to Federal Election Commission records stated that so far these companies have contributed over $900,000 to congressional candidates running this fall. The contributions are another way of convincing US lawmakers to take steps toward online casino legalization by creating a committee to study the impact legalized casino gambling would have in the country. Such a proposal has a chance of being passed by the Senate this year, said Ensign and Senate minority leader Harry Reid, a Democrat from Nevada.

Other lawmakers are staying far from gambling issues since the investigation of Jack Abramoff brought to light a network of connections between lawmakers and casinos. After pleading guilty to fraud and conspiring to corrupt public officials on behalf of clients in January, two Virginia representatives introduced new legislation that will help to shut down the flow of cash leaving the US for illegal gambling sites. Bob Goodlatte, Republican, and Rick Boucher, Democrat, introduced the new legislation that would force US financial institutions to work with law enforcement.

“Ultimately, we think it will be very, very difficult to get any prohibitive legislation through the Senate,” said gaming industry analyst, Matthew Gerard, referring to the proposed legislation.

According to Frank Fahrenkopf Jr., US casino companies feel “neutral” about the legislation. Fahrenkopf, the chief executive of the American Gaming Association, which represents Harrah’s Entertainment and MGM Mirage, said that the booming online gambling industry, “is just the wild, wild, West. Why not take a hard look at it?”

US Eager to Follow in Englands Footsteps

December 20th, 2007 in Online Casinos

Covering the pages of major media sources in the US like Bloombergs and the International Herald Tribune, are more and more reports of US casino companies placing pressure on politicians to legalize online casino gambling. While the United Kingdom is set to bring in a fortune in tax revenue from the best casino sites in the new online casino industry, US companies are starting to feel left Out.

Recently the American Gaming Association called for a congressional committee to begin studying the benefits and downfalls of legalized online casino gambling. The call comes in response to recent attempts by legislators to impose an immediate ban on online casino gambling in the United States.

Media reports named MGM Mirage, Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. among other major US casino operators, as the driving forces behind the increased pressure on Congress. Spokespersons and :lobbyists for the major ‘brick and mortar’ casinos were quoted saying that the only way to control the booming $12 billion Internet casino and gambling industry is to bring it home.

As of now owners of the best casino sites on the Internet are located oversees, while around 70% of the total customer population at online casino websites are American citizens. This means that at minimum, half the revenue taken in by online casino gaming sites comes from the US. According to the land based casino owners, the only thing left for Congress to do is to legalize, regulate and tax the industry.

“The argument the industry is making is, if it is being done offshore, why not bring it in to the US so it can be regulated?” said Nevada Republican, Senator John Ensign. Sen. Ensign has discussed the issues with representatives from the Las Vegas based Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., the largest casino owner world wide. “It doesn’t look like you can ban it.”

According to the Federal Election Commission records, these casino owning companies have contributed at least $900,000 to congressional candidates running in this fall’s elections. The companies have stated that their lobbyists are attempting to influence lawmakers into taking an initial step towards the legalization of online casino gambling by the creation of a federal commission set to study the industry.

Frank Fahrenkopf, the AGA president, says that US casino companies are considered, “neutral,” on the current House measure to create a ban that will stop the flow of cash to online casino companies outside of the US.

Although some still seem to be skeptical about the future of online casino gambling in the US, most land based casino companies are already prepared to open the best casino sites the world has ever seen.

Online Casino 100 Seals Safety

December 19th, 2007 in Online Casinos

The eCommerce and Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance (eCOGRA), announced today the new campaign to increase the number of guaranteed safe online casinos. The plan follows the announcement of 7 new poker room certifications with the, “Play It Safe,” seal from eCOGRA. The new campaign will create a new level of safe online casinos for customers and casinos committed to player safe gambling.

The campaign, entitled the “100 Seals Campaign,” hopes to have certified at least 100 online casinos and poker rooms by December of 2006, in the hopes that the seals will maintain higher standards of customer safety.

The eCOGRA campaign should reach additional audiences during the eight annual Global Interactive Gaming Summit and Expo (GIGSE) of 2006, held this year in Montreal, Canada. ECOGRA Charmian Michal Hirst will host a panel at the GIGSE on May 17th, at 2:30 pm. The panel will be called, “Self Regulation: Best Practices to Play It Safe,” and panelist will include industry big wigs such as Roy Cooke, and the player’s advocate Ted Loh.

“’Play It Safe’ online casinos and poker rooms already handle a substantial percentage of the total global online gaming business,” said Andrew Beveridge, eCOGRA CEO. “We intend to extend the player protection that is built into our international standards by bringing more top tier online gaming software providers and licensees on board before the year’s end.”

So far over a dozen casino and poker websites are undergoing eCOGRA’s third party inspection and monitoring. Due to the many safety concerns over internet gambling and identity theft issues, the “Play It Safe” seal will help to notify potential customers that a specific site is a safe online casino. The certification ensures customers that websites with the seal are concerned with the players needs for safety, honesty and fair gambling.

“If you’re ready to meet the 21st century challenges facing the industry, we’d like to invite you to join the 100 Seals Campaign and become one of the most respected 100 online gaming sites in the world,” said Beveridge in an invitation addressed to online gambling software providers.

As an independent standards authority for the online gambling industry, eCOGRA commits itself to providing safe online casinos for online casino and poker players across the globe. They are a non-profit organization that has already inspected and awarded the “Play It Safe” seal to 76 sites that comply with eCOGRA standards of fast payouts, fair gaming, efficient service and responsible conduct.
